For a pistol you are required to have either a North Carolina Pistol Permit in the county you live in or a North Carolina Carry Conceal License and a North Carolina Drivers License or a valid North Carolina ID Card.  For a long gun (shotgun or rifle) you will need a valid North Carolina Divers License or a Valid North Carolina ID Card and either have a valid North Carolina Carry Conceal License, or a “NICS” (National Instant Criminal Search) can be done at the time of purchase

It can be range from being instantly to hours or even up to several days if further background search is needed

Sometimes it is as simple as your name is the same as someone with a criminal record, therefore a deeper check is required to identify exactly who you are. Also the site can be inundated with a large amount of checks nationwide, which in turn slows the system down slightly.
